The Feldenkrais Method
Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais (1904-1984), Israeli physicist, researched the relationship of our movement habits, our perception, and the way we think, feel and act. He developed two complimentary approaches, Awareness Through Movement® (verbal group instruction), and Functional Integration® (non-verbal personalized instruction), and became international recognized in the 70’s. The Feldenkrais Method is a dynamic approach to learning which can help promote greater physical and mental flexibility.
Our whole self is mirrored in the quality of our movements, which is why the Feldenkrais Method uses movement as a means to improve general physical well-being. Disfunctional or disadvantageous movement patterns are replaced by new improved movement sequences; this is the only way that posture can be optimized and can endure.
The Feldenkrais Method develops flexibility, power, and range of motion without stretching and strain. It can be useful for people of all ages and any physical condition: it has a relaxing effect, eases movement restrictions, and supports the body’s healing process after an injury. In the long term, pain is reduced and faulty use of the movement apparatus is eliminated.
We offer:
Functional Integration®
In private Functional Integration® lessons the Feldenkrais teacher uses gentle touch to explore habitual movement patterns and suggests more comfortable options. Each lesson is customized for the student and is based on some activity or movement which the student would like to feel more comfortable with.
Awareness Through Movement®
In Awareness Through Movement® group classes, the Feldenkrais teacher gives verbal instructions for easy-to-learn, gentle movements, usually lying or sitting. The emphasis is on attending to the process and eliminating the need to achieve. The explorations involve not only moving but also sensing and imagining.
